French Horn

The French horn is one of the highest pitched brass instruments in a standard orchestra or wind ensemble, second only to the trumpet. However, it has a much wider pitch range than most brass instruments. Depending on the player, a horn can have an amazing four octave range.

One of the more unique features of the French horn is that they can be designed to switch between two keys. Most horns are designed to be tuned the key of F. However, a double horn has two sets of tubing, with an additional valve. This extra valve allows the horn to switch between the key of F and the key of Bb.

The French horn was originally used for hunting purposes. These early horns did not have the valves that are used on their modern equivalents, and therefore were limited to only playing a series of harmonics. As valves were added, and became more acceptable, the flexibility of the instrument greatly improved.
